Janal Talks: Towards a Cosmopolitanism of Things? Reflections on Migration and Modernity in Twentieth Century Kerala

This lecture examines the evolution of cosmopolitanisms in twentieth-century Kerala, focusing on migration and transnationalism. The former allowed for cosmopolitanism of ideas, while post-independence political conditions impacted migration and transnationalism, resulting in cosmopolitanism of duty. Dr. Devika will discuss how these changes impacted modernity in Kerala.
J Devika teaches and researches at Centre for Development Studies, Kerala, India. She is bilingual and writes in Malayalam and English. She has published in historical, social scientific, gender studies, and cultural studies journals and has four academic works in English.
