About the talk:
The ‘Save Alappad’ Movement arose from an ecologically vulnerable coastal village in Kerala where decades of beach sand mining have transformed land, livelihoods, and everyday life. This talk examines the movement from within, tracing the varied and sometimes conflicting perspectives of residents and protestors. Moving beyond the idea of a unified resistance, it highlights how questions of survival shape community responses to environmental degradation. Through these layered narratives, the talk situates Alappad’s struggle within broader debates on development, extractive industries, and environmental justice in Kerala.
