Attendees Registration Open

The Tenth Annual Conference of the Oral History Association of India, hosting at the Kerala Museum, Kochi, from 24-26 January 2025, will explore the theme ‘Coastal Histories – Stories of Resilience.’ This gathering seeks to document and preserve the cultural, environmental, and everyday life histories of India’s coastal communities, acknowledging their resilience while highlighting the challenges they face. Coastal communities, often perceived as “farmers of the sea,” have long sustained unique livelihoods shaped by their interactions with marine and littoral ecosystems. Their contributions—ranging from marine navigation and cultural exchanges to traditional fishing practices—are invaluable, yet frequently overlooked in policy and public discourse.

The conference papers and presentations will focus on bringing to life the living memories of coastal and littoral zones, including rivers, estuaries, lagoons, lakes, and waterways. They will address themes such as traditional practices, technologies, and cultural histories that have sustained coastal life, alongside discussions on the challenges posed by urbanization, globalization, and environmental changes. This event provides an opportunity to honour the deep-rooted knowledge and resilience of these communities while contributing to their broader recognition and preservation.
