Absences and Silences: Women in Kerala Theatre History
This lecture re-examines the historiography of Kerala theatre through a feminist lens, uncovering the systemic absences and silences surrounding women’s contributions. From early 20th-century amateur troupes to postcolonial professional stages, canonical narratives have marginalized female playwrights, performers, and directors, often erasing pioneers like those in the 1948 feminist play Thozhilkendrathilekku. By analyzing archival gaps and oral histories, the talk proposes a rereading that recovers these voices, challenging dominant male-centric frameworks and advocating for inclusive theatre scholarship.
